Hello again everyone. This is going to be one of those ‘crossover’ articles that deals with a hot topic issue from a Christian perspective. The southern border crisis and illegal immigration certainly is a hot topic, isn’t it? In Sunday School this morning at my church, the pastor covered the parallel passage of this in Exodus 22:21. As a reminder, I have been a Christian for 38 years and I also pastored 4 different churches for almost 15 years during a 20-year period. The professing universal church are not on the same page with this issue. Interestingly it seems that generally speaking, professing Christians in mainline churches believe that our country should allow open borders and receive illegal immigrants while evangelicals and fundamentalists believe we should honor the law and not allow open borders and receive illegal immigrants. Who is right? Does the above passage of scripture prove that mainline church Christians are right?
One problem that we have as Christians, and which is one of the main reasons we have so much division is adding more to a text than what’s there with our emotions and/or preconceived ideas. As you can see from the image, it’s called Eisegesis. So, what does that mean when it comes to this topic and issue? It means we are reading more into the texts about strangers/foreigners than what’s there in thinking that it means we are supposed to have open borders and not send immigrants back that came unlawfully to the United States. As is often correctly pointed out, unless we are a ‘Native American’ we are all immigrants or decedents of them. Yes, once they’re here and even while they’re here even illegally we are to treat properly in love. But that doesn’t mean that we can’t have laws governing how we get immigrants here as long as it doesn’t contradict the Bible and
the U.S. Constitution. You see, there is an interesting connection between the Bible and Constitution. The Bible says in two places (Romans 13:1-5; 1Peter 2:13-17) that we are subject ourselves to the higher authorities- and indeed we should. But here’s the rub: since we apply this to our country and time period today, the final authority for the United States is the Constitution. And while the Constitution restrains the government and not the people, it allows us to have laws for the governing of the people as long as they contradict it. Kapish? And if we do it lawfully, we can get the immigrants in here that we need and keep the dangerous criminals and those with terrorist ties out. But…
Our new Border Czar and former ICE Director Tom Homan (pictured above) has a tall task to accomplish in deporting the 11 million+ illegal immigrants that are already here due to the failed southern border policy if the Biden Administration. Let’s be praying for him and the efforts of doing this difficult task.
So, in summary, let’s treat legal immigrants and illegal ones while they’re here like we should and like everyone else. But that doesn’t mean you can’t have laws governing immigration, border walls and laws, or that you can’t arrest, jail and deport illegal immigrants. And I didn’t even get into the cost to our nation and various crimes including murders due to the last 4 years. What do you think?
